--- キャラクターグッズは小さい頃から好きでしたか？
「小さい頃はグリコのオマケをよく集めていました。とにかくおこづかいのほとんどはグリコのオマケに消えていた（笑）。当時のオマケは家電製品やらスポンジでできた動物が多くて、お人形さんごっこの中で使って遊んでいました」
--- 学生時代からやはり美術は得意科目だったんですか？
「中学時代の美術の時間はそんなに好きではありませんでした。とくに写生の時間になると、みんなと一緒の風景を描いてもつまんないと思って、男子とよく野球をしていました（笑）。
だけどゴシック体と明朝体を描き分けるレタリングの授業の時に、さっと描いて提出したら、美術の先生に呼びとめられて、『おまえは将来何になりたいのか』と聞かれたんですね。『両親がピアノの先生になれと言っていたので、ピアノの先生になります』と答えたら、先生が『おまえは両親に言われた通りの道に進むのか……おまえはデザインが向いているからデザインの世界に行け』と、突然言いはじめて……」
--- 中学時代からすでに道は決まっていたのでは？
「だけど全然ピンとこなかったんですよ。だから先生にデザインの世界と言われても"先生デザインって何ですか？"って思わず聞き返してしまった。
そうしたら先生が、歯みがきのポスターも本の表紙もすべてデザインだと教えてくれたのですが、やはりどうもしっくりこなくて、この人、何を言っているんだろうという感じでした（笑）。
だけど先生はとても熱心で、ぼくの大学時代の友人でいい美術教師がいるからそいつに学ぶといいと言って、ある高校への進学を勧めてくれました。だけどやはりどこかしっくりこなかったけれども、せっかくなのでその高校に進学したんです」
--- 中学の美術の先生に勧められた高校で、美術、商業デザインに目覚めたというわけですか？
「そうですね。中学時代の美術の先生が勧めてくれた美術部に入ったら、その美術部の顧問の先生は高知県展を推進している人で、うちの高校の美術部もどんどん出品しようという目標を持っていました」
--- 美術系に力をいれている高校だったんですか？
「いえいえ体育会系のクラブが強くて、部費はすべて体育会系にもっていかれて、文化系のクラブには部費がまわってこないような高校でした。だから県展に出品するために作品を作ろうにも材料費もなかったんです。
あるとき、部費の割り当ては生徒会が決めることを知って、美術部の予算をとるために、思い切って生徒会に立候補したんです」
--- 部費をとるために生徒会に立候補するとは、かなりの行動力ですね。結果はどうだったんですか？
「それがなんと当選しちゃったんです。生徒会執行部文化委員長になりました。そうしたら１年生のくせに生意気だということになって、その高校の女番長に睨まれて追いかけ回されました。だけど美術部の先輩がその女番長と仲が良くて、この子だけには手をださないでーと、頼み込んで、無事難を逃れました。そして生徒会の権限で美術部に部費がまわるようにしたんです（笑）
それで早速、わたしも本の装丁を県展に出品したら、入選。他の部員もどんどん入選して、高校生の中で数多く入選をした高校として NHK からも取材を受け、テレビにも出たんです。しかし美術部の先生から『いくら入選しても、特選をとらないと名前が残らないぞ』と釘をさされ、複雑な思いもありました。とにかく特選はプロがとる賞だから、高校生が受賞するのは難しい、ムリムリと言われたんです。
だけど私は県展に名前を残したくて高校３年生のとき特選を目指して出品したら、それがなんと、特選をとっちゃたんです。しかもその特選をとったのは、黒のアウトラインだけの一筆書きの親猫と子猫を描いた粉ミルクの広告デザインだったんです」
--- なんだかキティちゃんを彷彿とさせますね。
「ええ。この頃からわたしと猫は、深い因果で結ばれているのかもしれません（笑）」
